June 16th - Opening day of Bass Season - Heuvelton NY
If you ever get a chance and enjoy fishing a small body of water, above the
dam in Heuvelton is a great place to go. We made plans the night before to meet
at a central location and go over to Heuvelton to try some Bass fishing. Others
were also thinking the same thing as there were three other boats already in the
water fishing.
It was decided that Merrill Finny would ride and fish from my boat. We headed
upstream toward the dam in order for Merrill to try the weed beds with
surface and spinner baits in hopes of getting a bass to strike. I opted to
set-up a bottom bounce with a worm harness to fish for walleye that inhabit
these waters. I ended up catching two walleyes as well as numerous sunfish.

Merrill had a few strikes and had one bass almost to the boat before it came
off the hook. There were a lot of swirls in the shallows but I think they were
carp in there feeding. Brent & Jordan had about the same luck from the other
boat. They had some hits using the white floating mouse using slight jerks to
entice the fish.
We called it a day at 11 am as I had other commitments to attend to. The
three of them were going to take a shot at Pains Lake in Oxbow later in the
afternoon and I have yet to hear how they turned out. I have fished this body of
water before and had great luck with a rubber warm, usually purple with a white
tail. Just toss it out and allow it to sink completely. Using your wrist, lift
the pole gently about 3 feet and then allow it to drop reeling in the slack. The
bass tend to hit it on the way down and you will feel resistance as you lift it
again.
