Lake Champlain, Rouses Point Region
Decided to take a weeks vacation on Lake Champlain to see if the Bass fishing
was as good as my son and future son in law were telling me. We loaded up the
bear minimum of supplies knowing it would be easier to just pick-up the food at
one of the local grocery stores. I hooked on the 17 Deep V-Hull Bass tracker
boat with the 40 horse Johnson outboard. Its equipped with a live well and
plenty of storage space.
At the same time, there was a Pro Tour Bass Masters Tournament taking place
and it was nice to visit with a few of them on the lake while fishing. Of course
we were unable to talk anything about the actual fishing and the hot spots as it
was against the rules and could disqualify the anglers. I enjoy fishing but no
where near the amount this guys do. They eat, sleep and drink fishing.
We arrived in time to put the boat in and try a little afternoon fishing. It
happened to be a pretty windy afternoon so I ended up doing a few slow passes to
see where the weed beds and drop offs were. Once located, I would set-up a drift
pattern above the weeds and drift through them using a 1/4 ounce jig. I had good
luck with a number of different color combinations but what worked the best was
the orange yellow.
The following morning I headed out before sunrise, the water was like glass
with no wind. I once again headed for a section of weed beds located out near
the middle of the channel. It was a high sloping mound that just appeared out of
nowhere. I eased in next to one of the channel markers and tossed some surface
baits. Only the smaller bass and a occasional perch would hit the bait. I then
went to the rubber worm bouncing it through the weeds and hooked into some
larger bass. If your into perch fishing, this lake can fill your live well in a
hurry.
The rest of the week brought the high winds back and I would basically go
back to setting up above the weed beds and drift through them running a worm
harness on one rod and a jig outfit on the other. Both produced equal amount of
bass. I was told there is walleye in the lake, but never encountered any.
We also have a family camp on Union Falls that we end up having guys weekend,
opening day in May. I take the 14 foot aluminum boat with a 9.9 Mercury outboard
as this is the largest motor allowed on the lake. There is a state launch but we
have always used Macintyre's and will continue too. If you are looking for a
place to fish for the day for walleye, bass , pike or perch...these guys also do
boat rentals and have everything from tackle to the bait.
