Walleyes in the St.Lawrence - 6/14/07

Robert |

The Dam |
It was decided that the following morning we would head over to the
St.Lawrence River for the first time this season for walleyes. 3am came and it
was out to prep the boat, put the batteries back in after charging over night
and taking the night crawlers out of the crawler fridge located in the garage.
By 4:15 we were underway in the darkness with fog hanging low from the temp
dropping and cooling
down the night before.
A little after 5am found us
entering the Lisbon Beach area that sports a great public boat launch for all to
use. Guess we weren't the only ones with walleye on our minds, two other groups
were pulling in and headed to the same location.
 |
By 5:15 we had the boat in the water and gear
stowed for the 15 minute trip downstream to a set of locks and a dam that
stretched across the St.Lawrence River. My son Robert started rigging the
poles with a 1 oz bottom bouncer and a 27 to 36 inch worm harness.
Here is
the trick if you want to fish this location, you need to position the boat
up under the doors located in the above picture and have everyone cast
upstream. Once the cast is out, the driver needs to hit full reverse with
the boat until you reach the outside of the concrete pillars.
If your boating skills are anything less than experienced, don't try this
method. The swift current and undertow will toss you into the pillars in a
fraction of a second. Just have everyone cast toward the pillars and drift
downstream.

We both had a large number of hits that couldn't connect but
still came away with lunch with Rob catching a 23 inch walleye and myself
with a 19 inch one.
If you plan on doing any fishing in this neck of the
woods for walleyes, get an early start. Most of the feeding activities tend
to slow down by 9am. I have yet tried it but I would be willing to bet on
overcast days, and evening fishing would show the same results.
Next trip we will be jigging outcroppings and weed beds as we marked a lot of
fish on the humps and outcroppings.

Fishing isn't the only things going on at the St.Lawrence. We watched two
large ships navigate by us as well as a flock of ducks swim right up to our boat
