Walleyes in Trout Lake?
We had heard a rumor that the state had been stocking walleyes in Trout lake
for a number of years. The worst is that I only live 4 miles from the lake and
had heard noting until this years while reading the NYS guide and regulations
did I see a date and size limit on walleyes there. So I started asking around if
anyone had been catching any. After talking to others, I guess what took place
was it was suppose to be an air drop for Cedar lake which is right next door to
Trout Lake. Somehow there was a mix-up and the pilot did the drop into Trout
Lake. Some have been caught in the 22 to 24 inch range.
Trout Lake is well know for it's lake trout and rainbows with depth of up to
90 feet in some areas. The lake is not really that big in that if it covers 100
acres I would be surprised. It also offers some great small mouth bass as well
as some great perch fishing. Dick Ashley offers a boat launch at his marina on
the Edwards side of the lake. He asks for a 5.00 donation to help offset the
cost of liability insurance associated with a public launch which is more than
fair.
Most would say that the lake went from being primary a great fishing spot to
a more recreational. A lot of the camps have changed hands and the majority are
owned by people from downstate that come upon the weekends looking to use their
runabouts for water skiing
So a day was set and Brent, Robert and myself headed for the lake around 6am
on a Sunday morning. We decided to take the big boat to give it a trial run
after being in storage all winter before taking it over to the St.Lawrence. We
decided to go with 1/4 oz bottom bouncers with worm harness 27 to 36 inches long
doing a slow troll. The fish finder had marked some large schools of fish that
seemed to stay in the 36 to 44 foot deep range even when we were in 90 foot of
water. The surface water temp was 71.

We had run into a couple of other guys out trolling that had said yesterday
the fish were really biting...isn't that always the way? They were trolling for
rainbow and Lakers and had no luck yet. We fished till around 10am with the only
fish being caught was a smallmouth bass by Brent.
We are planning on retuning to the Lake to try some drift fishing with jigs
and worms, a usual favorite of ours in trying to catch walleyes. If you get a
chance and want to give it a try, we suggest Dick's Marina to put your boat in.
Let us know how you turn out. Friends of ours over on the St.Lawrence river say
they are clobbering the walleye with the bottom bounces and worm harnesses down
below Lisbon beach.
